Gottingen Sud was a terminal station on the “Der Gartetalbahn” in Germany. This 760mm gauge line had an interchange with the standard gauge, but the model makes no attempt to replicate the prototype.
The layout shows the method used to transfer standard gauge vehicles onto either narrow gauge transporter wagons (“rollwagen”), or bogies (“rollbocke”). The standard gauge wagons would then be taken by narrow gauge train to their final destination, either attached to normal service trains, or as specials. Typically coal wagons are transferred, and taken on the narrow gauge line to eventually arrive at Der Gartetalbahn, and wood is transferred back in the opposite direction.
The narrow-gauge track-work is Peco Oe; of necessity, the mixed-gauge track-work is all hand built using code 100 rail on copper-clad paxolin sleepers. All the points are operated by either Peco or Seep motors. Cab control is used with Gaugemaster hand-held units.
The narrow-gauge stock is a mixture of scratch-built items, and modified Fleischmann “Magic Train” ones. Standard-gauge stock is mainly from Rail-mo kits. The shunting loco is a scratch-built “Koff-2”. Other standard-gauge locos also put in occasional appearances.
Layout size: 14ft. X 18ins. It is self-supporting, and requires two operators. Although it can be operated as a separate stand-alone layout, It is designed to run as a combined layout with DER GARTETALBAHN.

Station, with standard gauge loco to rear, and narrow-gauge lines to the fore.
Narrow-gauge level crossing.
Above: A VW ‘beetle’ waits for a train to pass.
Below: A wood wagon is shunted over the crossing, to be transferred to the standard gauge line.
Transfer facility: a coal-loaded wagon is shunted onto a low-load narrow-gauge transporter.
< Left: another view of narrow-gauge lines, just to right of level crossing. The VW still waits at the crossing - perhaps another train is due!
